Il-logħob bil-kliem, il-manipulazzjoni tal-forma u l-funzjoni tal-lingwa għall-gost, jieħu bosta suriet, bħall-ħaġa moħġaġa, il-paronomasja, ir-rebus, l-anagramma, u tagħwiġ l-ilsien. F’din it-taħdita Dr Michael Spagnol jesplora l-ħafna modi kif nilagħbu b’elementi lingwistiċi differenti mill-alfabett sal-pronunzja, mit-tifsir sal-grammatika bil-għan li juri kif il-logħob bil-kliem jgħaddi bil-fomm minn ġidd għal ġidd sewwasew għax hu karatteristika intrinsika tal-lingwa.

Dr Michael Spagnol hu lettur fid-Dipartiment tal-Malti u l-Istitut tal-Lingwistika tal-Università ta’ Malta. Ir-riċerka tiegħu tiffoka fuq il-morfoloġija, is-semantika, il-lessikografija u d-djaletti tal-Malti. F’Jannar tal-2013 fetaħ il-paġna ta’ Facebook “Kelma Kelma” li tiġbor kurżitajiet lingwistiċi bħall-kelma tal-ġurnata, il-qwiel, it-taqbiliet tat-tfal, u l-logħob bil-kliem. U mill-2014 lil hawn hu wieħed mill-organizzaturi tal-kunċerti “Kelma Kelma Nota Nota” li huma tiżwiqa ta’ umoriżmu, mużika u letteratura Maltija.

Wordplay occurs when people manipulate the forms and functions of language as a source of fun. It takes many forms, such as riddles, puns, rebuses, anagrams, and tongue twisters. In this talk, Dr Michael Spagnol will consider the various ways in which we play with different linguistic elements from spelling to pronunciation, from semantics to grammar — with the aim of showing that wordplay is passed on orally from one generation to another precisely because it is an inherent property of human language.

Dr Michael Spagnol is a lecturer in the Department of Maltese and the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Malta. His research interests include morphology, semantics, lexicography, and dialectology. Since January 2013 he is the administrator of the Facebook page “Kelma Kelma”, which deals with several linguistic issues, such as the word of the day, proverbs, nursery rhymes, wordplay, and the like. He is also one of the organisers of the concert series “Kelma Kelma Nota Nota” which bring humour, Maltese music and literature on stage together.
