Natalino Fenech ilu jagħmel ricerka fil-qasam tal-ornitoloġija sa mis-snin 80 u jispeċjalizza kemm fix-xjenza ornitoloġika, l-istudju tal-għasafar, kif ukoll l-etno-ornitoloġija, l-istudju tar-relazzjoni tal-bniedem mal-għasafar f’kull aspett tal-hajja.
Dr Fenech iggradwa mill-Università ta’ Malta u kiseb dottorat fix-xjenzi soċjali mill-Università ta’ Durham. Huwa ippubblika għadd ta’ artikli akkademiċi u kotba li tnejn minnhom rebħu t-taqsima tar-riċerka tal-Premju Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb.
Public Talk on Falling in Love with Birds
On Tuesday 10 March Dr Natalino Fenech shall be giving a talk in Maltese entitled “Ninnamraw mal-għasafar, jew l-għasafar f’ħajjitna” (Falling in love with birds, or birds in our lives).
This talk is part of the Oral Traditions project of the Department of Maltese in the Faculty of Arts which is supported by the Research Fund of the University and Klabb Kotba Maltin.
The speaker will discuss the influence birds have on all aspects of our lives with an emphasis on the impact on language, literature, nicknames as well as expressions
and proverbs, some of which are still in use. Bird names and their origins will also be discussed.
Natalino Fenech has been involved in scientific studies of birds since the 1980s. Apart from ornithological research, he is also specialised in ethno-ornithology,
which studies the relationship and interactions between birds and people in all aspects of life.
Dr Fenech graduated from the University of Malta and obtained a PhD in social sciences from the University of Durham. He has published several papers as well as books, two of which won the first prize in the research category in the National Book Awards.

Public Talk on the Names of Valleys
On Tuesday 18 February 2020, Simon Salafia is giving a public talk in Maltese in the Library of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Malta on “Oral Sources for the Names of Valleys in Malta and Gozo.” The talk starts at 6.00pm.

This talk is part of the Oral Traditions project of the Department of Maltese in the Faculty of Arts which is supported by the Research Fund of the University and Klabb Kotba Maltin.
Mr Simon Salafia will be talking about how toponyms are collected from oral sources and how these names contribute to studies about the landscape of the Maltese islands and our national language. In his talk, the speaker will also propose ways of preserving these names which are part of our collective memory but risk being lost because they have never been written down.
Simon Salafia graduated as an electrical engineer from the University of Malta. He then studied Spanish at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He is passionate about travelling and about Maltese history and culture, especially the Medieval period. He has been carrying out fieldwork on placenames in the Maltese islands for many years. He is a licensed guide and professional interpreter. In November 2019 he gave a well-received talk on toponyms at the University of Malta main library as part of the Oral Traditions project.

Early musical instruments were not created for their beautiful tone, but rather for their essential function within ritualised human behaviour. These rituals were often associated with people’s innate fears of the unknown or hopes connected with their daily existence. Agricultural life, the seasons of the year and the cycle of life of individuals, their family, crops and livestock were their only aspirations. Many instruments were therefore accredited with magical powers of banishing danger and evil from people and their surroundings, and everything that they felt was most essential to their survival.
In this presentation Dr Anna Borg Cardona will be looking at a few of the musical instruments that have, or once had, such magical or ritual functions.
The speaker has ħad a lifelong passion for music and art. She graduated with a B.A. in English and French from the University of Malta in 1978 and received an associate diploma in music teaching and Licentiate diploma in piano performing from Trinity College, London, in 1980. Dr Anna Borg Cardona studied Musicology at the University of Malta (1995-1997) and was awarded a Fellowship by the London College of Music for Professional Achievement in the field of musicology and organology (F.L.C.M., 2012). She obtained her Ph.D in Music from the University of Southampton in 2018.
Dr Borg Cardona is the author of three books and several articles in Maltese and foreign journals. She is currently carrying out research on Maltese musical instruments, music, and traditional song and dance. She guest curated the exhibition ‘Whistles from Ritual to Toys’ (2009) and contributed to the setting up of the Maltese section at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Arizona. In 2019 she guest curated Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti’s exhibition ’Music in Malta – from Prehistory to Vinyl’. Anna Borg Cardona is the founder of Gukulari Ensemble, that has given performances in Malta, Budapest, Vienna, Bologna, Portugal, and Spain.

Several old narratives, songs, rituals, riddles, and superstitions have survived in the Mediterranean region from antiquity until today. Nevertheless, the ways of transmission are no longer the same. This talk will give some examples of the transformations occurring nowadays in the field of oral literature.

At present he teaches Hispanic Literature at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Gilbert Calleja, li twieled fl-1978, huwa fotografu u riċerkatur li jiffoka fuq temi soċjali f’Malta u fir-regjun tal-Mediterran u jiddokumenta nies u sitwazzjonijiet fuq medda ta’ snin sħaħ ta’ riċerka.
Bħalissa qed jagħmel dottorat mas-Centre for Research and Education in the Arts and Media (CREAM) fl-Università ta’ Westminster, Londra fejn qed jinvestiga l-potenzjal ta’ pjattaformi medjatiċi ġodda bħala għodda għal rakkonti mhux fittizji. L-interessi prinċipali tiegħu jinkludu proġetti ta’ kollaborazzjoni bħala metodi ta’ riċerka u formati multimedjali bħala strutturi ta’ rappreżentazzjoni. It-titlu tar-riċerka tiegħu hu “Identity and the Maltese fisherman: challenging stereotypes througħ multi-media platforms – a practice-based case study.”
Ix-xogħol tiegħu kien parti mill-padiljun Malti fil-Biennale ta’ Venezja fl-2017. Title: Untranslated and untranslatable: speech in ethnographic filmmaking. A case-study with a Maltese fishing boat.
In this presentation I will be discussing my long-term experience working with a Maltese fishing boat and the fishermen’s use of language. Through various audio-visual examples from my fieldwork I will discuss the use of speech as a way to generate emotion and as an opportunity for tension and poetic interpretation in non-fiction storytelling.
Starting by defining ethnographic film as experiential research and its position within the non-fiction storytelling filmmaking tradition I will them proceed to look at specific works by the likes of Louis Bunuel, Robert Gardner and the Ethnographic Sensory Lab. Exploring the structures and dynamics of sense making in the representation of the real, I will try to expose how ethnographers working as documentary makers have conducted and processed audio-visual research and to what effect.
I will then focus on speech and the questions surrounding the way it is translated and how translation influences the storytelling process. More importantly I will also look at instances in documentary making where speech has been either left in its original language, thus leaving it up to the public to understand or guess what is being said on screen, or has been edited out completely. Alluding to the problems surrounding subtitling and the relationship between images, sound and text I engage in a phenomenological reading of my own research with Maltese fishermen to highlight the inherent expressive qualities of speech as an essential part of the ethnographic encounter. How have speech and the conditions in which the spoken word is uttered shaped my storytelling process?
Informed by my own experience of talking and listening to fishermen as well as my reading of the log-book/diaries of one of the fishermen I hypothesize on the potential of tapping into the dynamics of dialogue and the written account as structuring models for developing web-based non-fiction storytelling interfaces.
Gilbert Calleja (b.1978) is a documentary photographer focusing on long-term socially engaged projects in his native Malta and around the Mediterranean.
As a practice-based PhD researcher at the Centre for Research and Education in the Arts and Media (CREAM) at the University of Westminster, London, Gilbert is looking into the potential of new media platforms for non-fiction storytelling. He is particularly interested in collaborative ethnographic processes and multimedia representations. The title of his research is ‘Identity and the Maltese fisherman: challenging stereotypes through multi-media platforms – practice-based case study’.
A selection of photographs from his three-year project working with transgender individuals in Malta was recently shown at the Venice biennale (2017) as part of the Maltese pavilion. He has also produced a 5.1 immersive audio piece for ‘Dal Baħar Madwarha’ exhibition as part of the Valletta2018 (European City of Culture) cultural events programme. Other recent exhibitions and commissions include Lampara (Berlaymont Buildings, Brussels, 2017), ‘L.O.M.L.’ short film commissioned for the Mediterranean International Literature festival (2016) and VIVA, The culture of Aging (Valletta, 2015). His work has also been shown at the Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles and the Caochangdi Photospring festival in Beijing.
Gilbert has worked as a freelance photographer and studied history of art and fine arts at the University of Malta (2000) and the university of Paris, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (2004).

Nhar il-Ġimgħa 11 ta’ Ottubru 2019, fis-6.00pm, Joe Morana se jagħmel taħdita dwar “Ir-Riħ fil-Qala’,” fil-Mużew Marittimu, il-Birgu.
Din it-taħdita mis-sensiela fuq It-Tradizzjoni Orali tad-Dipartiment tal-Malti tal-Università ta’ Malta se ssir bi sħab mal-Mużew Marittimu ta’ Heritage Malta u bħala parti mill-programm ta’ Birgufest.
L-attività hija miftuħa għal kulħadd u d-dħul huwa b’xejn.
Id-Dipartiment tal-Malti fil-Fakultà tal-Arti jirringrazzja lill-Fondi ta’ Riċerka tal-Università ta’ Malta u lill-Klabb Kotba Maltin għall-għajnuna tagħhom f’dan il-proġett fuq It-Tradizzjoni Orali li issa daħal fir-raba’ sena tiegħu. Din it-taħdita ta’ Joe Morana se tkun l-ewwel waħda għal din is-sena akkademika.
Il-gżejjer Maltin sa mill-qedem kienu magħrufin u apprezzati għall-pożizzjoni strateġika tagħhom f’nofs il-bahar Mediterran, kemm mil-lat navali militari, kif ukoll mil-lat tat-tbaħħir kummerċjali. Għalhekk ġew okkupati jew maħkuma minn ġnus merkanti u potenzi militari varji.
Matul is-sekli, il-komunikazzjoni ta’ dawn il-gżejjer ma’ pajjiżi ġirien kienet tiddependi għalkollox minn bastimenti u bċejjeċ tal-baħar armati bil-qlugħ ta’ diversi għamliet u qisien li jvarjaw skont l-iskop rispettiv tagħhom. Intużaw kemm għat-traġitt bejn il-gżejjer Maltin u kemm għas-sajd.
F’din it-taħdita Joe Morana jħares fuq fuq lejn l-evoluzzjoni ta’ bċejjeċ u opri tal-baħar bil-qlugħ li kienu jbaħħru bejn il-Gzejjer Maltin u lil hinn minnhom. Il-kelliem se jippreżenta t-terminoloġija Maltija biex jagħti tagħrif dwar il-prinċipji bażiċi ta’ kif titħaddem dgħajsa bil-qlugħ u ħwejjeġ relatati.
Fi żminijietna l-qlugħ m’għadux jintuża fuq bastimenti, bċejjeċ u opri tal-baħar li jbaħħru għal skopijiet kummerċjali u essenzjalment huwa limitat għal attivitajiet rikreattivi jew sportivi. F’dan il-kuntest, fit-tahdita tiegħu Joe Morana se jagħti ħarsa ukoll lejn l-ibburdjar bil-frejgatini tal-latin u lejn x’għad fadal mill-opri tal-baħar Maltin imħaddma bil-qlugħ tradizzjonali.
Wieħed mill-għanijiet tat-taħdita huwa li tixpruna aktar riċerka u jiġu ppubblikati aktar xogħlijiet bil-Malti dwar is-snajja’ tal-baħħara u xogħlijiet u ħwejjeġ oħra relatati mal-attività marittima ta’ pajjiżna.
Joe Morana, mill-Birgu, twieled fl-1956 u ħa l-edukazzjoni formali tiegħu fl-Iskola Primarja tal-Birgu u l-Iskola Sekondarja ta’ San Gużepp, Raħal Ġdid. Studja wkol fl-Università ta’ Malta fejn kiseb Diploma in Labour Studies u Diploma fin Marketing. Imbagħad għamel Masters fit-Training and Human Resources Management mal-Università ta’ Leicester. Joe Morana ħadem f’diversi karigi u dipartimenti fis-Servizz Pubbliku u għal xi żmien kien uffiċjal fi trade union ewlenija. Illum rtira mix- xogħol formali.
L-ibburdjar hu fost l-interessi ewlenin tiegħu u ilu jipprattika din id-dixxiplina għexieren ta’ snin. Għandu esperjenza sew fl-ibburdjar sportiv (regatta) u rikreattiv, kemm f’Malta kif ukoll barra minn Malta. F’dawn l-aħħar snin żviluppa interess u kiseb esperjenzi fuq opri tal-bahar Taljani bil-qlugħ latin tradizzjonali f’numru ta’ lokalitajiet fi Sqallija u f’reġjuni oħrajn tal-Italja.
Joe Morana’s public talk on Sailing Boats and Techniques
On Friday 11th October, at 6.00pm, Joe Morana is giving a public talk in Maltese on traditional sailing boats and sailing techniques entitled “Ir-Riħ fil-Qala’” at the Maritime Museum in Birgu. This event is part of the Oral Traditions project of the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta, which is now in its fourth year, and coincides with the 2019 edition of Birgufest.
The talk, which is being held in collaboration with Heritage Malta, is open to the general public and entrance is free. The Oral Traditions project is supported by the Research Fund of the University of Malta and by Klabb Kotba Maltin.
The speaker will be looking briefly at the evolution of sailing vessels that travelled both between the Maltese Islands and beyond. He will be presenting the terminology in Maltese and looking at ways these ferries or fishing vessels operated.
Joe Morana, who was born in Birgu in 1956, has diplomas in Labour Studies and Marketing from the University of Malta and a Masters in Training and Human Resources Management from the University of Leicester. He worked for many years in the public service and was an official in a leading trade union.
He has been a sailing enthusiast for decades and has been part of crews on sailing boats in Malta and abroad. In recent years he has carried out research on lateen sails in Malta and Sicily and other parts of Italy.
It-Tlieta 21 ta’ Mejju 2019, 6.00pm, il-Prof. MouradYelles mill-Inalco ta’ Pariġi se jagħmel taħdita dwar “The Status of Oral Tradition in the Formation and Evolution of Literary Canons in Algeria : from colonial to post-colonial contexts,” fil-Librerija tal-Fakultà tal-Arti tal-Università ta’ Malta, Tal-Qroqq.
MouradYelles għandu esperjenza kbira fil-qasam tal-tradizzjoni orali fil-Mediterran u jaf lil Malta u dan il-proġett tad-Dipartiment tal-Malti sew.
Il-Prof. Yelles speċjalizza fil-letteratura komparata u r-riċerka tiegħu tiffoka fuq l-influwenzi ta’ letteraturi differenti fuq xulxin, il-kitbiet u t-tradizzjonijiet orali tal-Magreb, u fuq iċ-ċinema, il-mużika, u l-immaġinarji postkolonjali. Il-Prof. Yelles studja fl-Universitajiet tal-Algier, Londra (SOAS) u s-Sorbonne (Paris 3). Kemm-il darba għamel taħditiet akkademiċi organizzati mid-Dipartiment tal-Malti fl-Università ta’ Malta, fosthom l-ewwel taħdita mis-sensiela dwar It-Tradizzjoni Orali li saret f’Mejju tal-2016.

Din hija intervista ma’ Yanika Schembri Fava ta’ Theresa Gauci fil-programm Rokna Kulturali fuq Radju Malta li xxandar it-Tnejn 13 ta’ Mejju 2019.
Fil-ktieb Il-Folklore Malti (1975), fl-aħħar kapitlu “Xogħol Mibdi jew li Għad Irid Isir,” Ġużè Cassar Pullicino jagħti rendikont ta’ xi oqsma sajmin mit-tradizzjoni orali li rridu nirriċerkaw. Cassar Pullicino jħeġġeġ lir-riċerkaturi biex jgħaddu iżjed ’il quddiem “fis-suġġett fuq il-linji ġodda,” jonkella jorbtu u jgħaqqdu flimkien “it-trufijiet imxerrda ta’ xogħlijiet mibdija bla mitmuma.”
Din it-taħdita se turi kif permezz ta’ dan il-proġett dwar it-Tradizzjoni Orali mxejna fuq il-passi ta’ Cassar Pullicino. Yanika Schembri Fava, barra li se tiffoka fuq ix-xogħlijiet li għamilna fi tliet snin ta’ ħidma fil-proġett dwar it-tradizzjoni orali, wara 44 sena mill-kapitlu li kiteb Cassar Pullicino, se titfa’ dawl fuq dawk l-oqsma li jeħtieġu aktar riċerka. Fit-taħdita se jkun hemm diskussjoni strutturata mal-udjenza bl-għan li jinkixfu aktar aspetti biex nimxu aktar ’il quddiem fil-ħidma ta’ dan il-proġett.

Yanika Schembri Fava hija r-riċerkatriċi ewlenija u l-amminstratriċi tal-proġett tad-Dipartiment tal-Malti tal-Università dwar It-Tradizzjoni Orali. Studjat il-Malti fl-Università ta’ Malta u kitbet it-teżi tal-baċellerat bit-titlu “Funzjonijiet Soċjali tal-Vers Popolari Malti: Is-Seħta u l-Iskunġrar” (2016). Fil-futur beħsiebha tippubblika l-ewwel ktieb tagħha b’versi popolari ta’ seħta u ta’ skunġrar, kemm mir-riċerka li għamlet għat-teżi, kif ukoll wara. Il-qasam tat-tradizzjoni orali, beda jinteressaha minn mindu kienet żgħira, meta kienet tara persuni qrib tagħha jużaw xi versi superstizzjużi u taħnin biex iraqqdu t-trabi. Madankollu, l-interess kompla kiber meta studjat “L-Eqdem Testi Poetiċi Maltin,” fosthom il-versi popolari Maltin.
Wara li tlesti l-Masters fit-tagħlim, Yanika Schembri Fava beħsiebha tkompli l-istudji tagħha fit-tradizzjoni orali fil-livell ta’ Masters.
